Where to Stay for NYE in London
Location is everything on New Year's Eve in London. The closer you stay to the action, the better — both for the experience and for getting home after midnight when transport gets complicated.
Best areas to stay:
- South Bank / Waterloo — closest to the fireworks viewing area, excellent transport links, great restaurants and bars
- Embankment / Covent Garden — right in the heart of it all, walking distance from Temple Pier (our departure point)
- Southwark / London Bridge — great value compared to central, short walk to the river
- Victoria — excellent transport links including the Victoria line and National Rail connections
Booking Tip
London hotels sell out for NYE faster than almost any other date of the year. If you're planning to visit, book your accommodation as early as possible — ideally 3-6 months in advance. Prices also rise significantly the closer you get to the date.
The London NYE Fireworks
London's New Year's Eve fireworks display launches from the London Eye at midnight and lasts approximately 12 minutes. It's genuinely world-class — one of the most-watched live events on the planet. The display incorporates music, lighting effects along the Thames, and fireworks at multiple points along the river.
To watch from the riverbank, the Mayor of London typically operates a ticketed viewing system for the best spots around the Embankment and South Bank. Check the Mayor of London's website closer to the event for ticket information — they're usually free but allocated via ballot.
Alternatively — and this is our strong recommendation — watch from the water. A Thames boat party gives you an unobstructed 360° view of the entire display from the middle of the river. It's simply the best way to experience it.
Getting Around London on NYE
Transport in London on New Year's Eve requires advance planning. Here's what you need to know:
London Underground
Transport for London typically runs a special NYE timetable on the Underground, with some lines running through the night. However, services can be extremely crowded around midnight. Check the TfL website for the confirmed NYE timetable closer to the date.
Night Buses
London's night bus network operates throughout the night on New Year's Eve and is a reliable option for getting home in the early hours. Download the TfL Go app for live bus times.
Taxis and Uber
Pre-booking a taxi is strongly recommended for getting home after midnight — demand is extremely high and waiting times can be long. Uber surge pricing can be significant on NYE. Plan your journey home before the night starts.
Walking
If you're staying centrally, walking is often the best option. Central London is very walkable and the atmosphere on the streets around midnight is extraordinary.
Transport Tip
If you're joining us on the Disco Waves boat party, we depart and return to Temple Pier on Victoria Embankment — a short walk from both Embankment (Bakerloo, District & Circle lines) and Temple (District & Circle lines) Underground stations.
What to Pack for NYE in London
- Warm layers — December in London is cold, averaging 3-8°C. If you're outdoors or on a boat, dress warmly
- Comfortable shoes — you'll be on your feet all night, and sensible footwear is required on any boat
- Valid photo ID — required for entry to most NYE events including ours (passport or driving licence)
- Contactless payment — most venues in London no longer accept cash
- Fully charged phone — for transport apps, tickets and capturing the midnight moment
Booking Your NYE Event in Advance
The most important advice we can give any visitor planning to spend NYE in London: book everything well in advance. The best events — boat parties, rooftop bars, restaurants with fireworks views, theatre shows — sell out months before December 31st.
